Brief v131

In an installation space people would go across conveyors or people movers to navigate to and from exhibits. As they go by, a sensor will recognize when they go past a certain point and cause a speaker to play a beep sound similar to that of scanning groceries. Similar to self-checkout machines the speaker will also play a voice clip announcing the price of the “item” which would be determined by multiple factors the scanners could pick up. To make the experience public, but more personal the acoustic setting around the speakers could be designed to play at the person passing the scanner. That way people just entering the belt walkway are less likely to know what is happening.

Inspiration w137

The focus for this idea was to create an unexpected interaction. I always had the mental connection that the airport people movers seemed like larger scale grocery store checkout conveyor belts. Originally this concept started as a whimsical idea that became more interesting when taking into consideration what possible interactions among the users could have.

  • n83 Users going multiple times to see if their “price“ is consistent.

  • Users comparing their “price“ to others.

  • Avoiding or encouraging others to use the people mover. l71

Through the old door and by the grand stairs, when the vagabond looked up and down she saw squares.
